LGH Winches were approached for a very exciting project located in Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada. The primary objective was to support Pennecon Energy Hydraulic Systems Ltd with the installation of a series of heavy-duty risers on a Concrete Gravity Structure (CGS) being constructed for an offshore fixed drilling platform.

Challenge

The primary challenge was the sheer scale and weight of the CGS and the risers. The CGS, standing at 145m tall and weighing 210,000t, presented a unique engineering problem. The heaviest riser, weighing 47t, required a powerful and reliable winch system to be precisely positioned at the CGS’s apex.

Solution

Rotrex Winches provided a robust solution to this complex challenge by supplying an SP90 hydraulic winch system. This powerful winch, measuring 5m x 3m x 4m and weighing 24t, was strategically mounted on an inclined base frame at the top of the CGS.

To ensure successful operations, LGH Winches also dispatched an experienced engineer to commission the winch system and train site personnel. This collaborative approach facilitated the smooth and efficient pull-in of all risers, adhering to the project’s timeline.
